On Tuesday, an unidentified man was arrested alongside one other person after slapping the French President, Macron on his face, according to a report by Reuters.
The video which went viral on the internet via Twitter showed how a man clad in a green t-shirt slapped Macron after the president walked outside and met with people standing behind a short fence in the Drome region of southeastern France.
In the video, the man could be seen shouting “à bas la Macronie” meaning “down with Macron” before grabbing the President closer toward him to slap him, then security intervened.
According to reports, the man who committed the act alongside another man who accompanied him, both 28, were both detained by the police.
Reasons behind President Macron’s visit were to hold talks about loosening COVID-19 restrictions and visit a high school that was training students to work in hotels and restaurants, as per Associated Press reports.
In an interview with a local newspaper in France, Macron said;
“We must not let isolated acts, ultra-violent individuals, like there had been some also in (street) protests, dominate the public debate: they don’t deserve it.”
“I greeted the people who were by the man’s side and made pictures with them. I continued and will continue. Nothing will stop me.”
